Recruiting Interest:
CAST (2018). Universal Design for Learning Guidelines version 2.2. Retrieved from http://udlguidelines.cast.org
Minimize threats and distractions:
- create a classroom that allows students to have flexible seating, minimal distractions, soft lighting
- Ensure that there are minimal things on the wall
- Only have what is necessary: class rules/routines for example. They are necessary as reminders, but there is no need for other “personal” touches to be spread out everywhere
- Ensure that there is minimal background distractions
- How can you make a sensory smart classroom? What changes need to be made?
- Allow for sensory/body breaks
- Allow for different areas of the classroom to provide different opportunities for breaks (peace corner, under the desk, quiet corner)
- Allow students to take accountability and ownership of the classroom by helping to organise it
How can you recruit interest?
- Find access points for all learners
- Teach to the side pins, you will be able to reach all learners
- Be authentic with the lessons, what is the purpose?
- Allow for students to have choice: show how they learned, to complete the tasks. Allow of a variety of ways for students to complete a task
Highlight/Celebrate:
- be sure to celebrate what is being done, be authentic and specific
